Winds on Monday 12th Sept

Post  alcass on Tue Sep 13, 2011 5:16 am

Hi Folks
7pm Monday
Just been up to check everything at the club. All boats seem secure (retied a couple) and there are no sign of problems. Gusting 35 when I was there. I'll try to keep an eye on things over the next couple of days.

I was away last week on a cycling holiday taking in the Pennines and Northumberland. Crossing the Pennines in gale force winds was certainly pretty hair-raising but I can confirm that the principles of safe cycling in a cross wind (or a broad reach) are very much the same as in dinghy sailing: you bear away in the gusts. This does take some of the force out of the gust though admittedly the increased chances of collisions with passing traffic does make it a more risky manoeuvre than a bear-away on the reservoir. If things get too tricky to stay on the bike you can always get off and walk - not an option which can easily or safely be attempted from a boat.
